Collin Murray- Orioles Development Coach

Episode 14 season 3 is out with Collin Murray. Collin is currently a development coach in the Baltimore Orioles Organization. Before working with the Baltimore Orioles, Collin was a graduate assistant at Georgia Southern University studying to get his master’s in communication and leadership. Collin has a concentration using R. His strengths include data visualization and R shinny app.

Before working with the Baltimore Orioles, Collin talks about how he got into baseball. His first job wasn’t in player development, but it was a sales job with the Miami Marlins. He realized through that job he wanted to work directly with the players. Collin went to the winter meetings in 2019 and ended up getting a job with the Los Angeles Angels organization as a minor league video intern.

After his job with the Angels, Collin decided he wanted to get more into player development and coding so he reached out to a bunch of schools asking about graduate assistant jobs. He was offered a graduate assistant job with Georgia Southern and went from there.

During his time at Georgia Southern, Collin produced a player development tracker through an R shiny app that could evaluate each individual player based on their metrics. Collin talks about his story making this app and how he told his players he was going to come back from winter break throwing 90 mph but quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen and instead created this app.

After his season with Georgia Southern, Collin worked with the Detroit Tigers as a baseball information assistant. Collin talks about his experience working with coaches and players at a professional level each day and how much he learned over the summer.

Collin truly shows that with hard work, dedication, and determination you can learn how to code on your own. Collin talks highly about finding a mentor within the coding industry to really help you progress along the way. Collin learned how to code in about two years and is progressing each day.

I am excited to see Collin’s 2022 season and wish him nothing but the best of luck!
